AT&T Alascom Provides New Link to Education
Students follow local teacher competing in dog mushing expedition
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Feb. 23 2007 - AT&T Alascom, a subsidiary of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), will participate in a first-ever citywide curriculum program by donating live Internet streaming video of the Norman Vaughan Serum Run '25 dog mushing expedition for the Anchorage School District.
Sixty-three elementary schools in Anchorage and Eagle River plan to take part in the Serum Run project, which educates students on the history of the race and tracks the mushers' progress. Musher Lynda Barcome, a new addition to the event and a physical education teacher at Alpenglow Elementary School in Eagle River, will be highlighted.
AT&T Alascom will broadcast a live feed on February 26 at 1:30 p.m. from the City of Galena community center to the Alpenglow Elementary School auditorium. The entire school assembly will be able to interview Lynda from their seats almost 775 miles away. An additional live feed will air on March 9 from the finish line in Nome. The broadcasts will air on Channel 14 and be available for download at AttAlascom.com.
AT&T Alascom helped fund the production and printing of 7,500 curriculum booklets that will correlate the Serum Run '25 and its mushing teams with their math, geography, language arts and history exercises for the weeks during the race. "By providing this service to students and their teachers, we at AT&T Alascom are able to bridge the geographical gap between Anchorage and checkpoints along the race," said Mike Felix, President of AT&T Alascom. "The technology not only captures real time interaction between Lynda and the
students, it offers students a diverse learning dynamic that transcends
traditional textbooks."
The Serum Run '25 was created by the late Alaskan explorer Col. Norman Vaughan. It commemorates the 1925 "Great Race of Mercy" during which mushers and dog teams raced 674 miles across Alaska in five and a half days to bring serum to save the city of Nome from a diphtheria epidemic. The historic event is also famous for Balto, the lead dog in the race.
In the spirit of Colonel Vaughan, we embrace the adventure of the Serum
Run," said Mardell Kiesel, language arts coordinator for the ASD. "With
the advanced technology available to us, we're excited to give students
and families the opportunity to follow along the 776 miles of trail from
Nenana to Nome with Lynda and her team of athletes."
