AT&T Gives No-Cost Internet Service to Five Rural Alaska CommunitiesANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct. 30, 2008 - AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced that it is providing Internet service at no cost to five rural southeast Alaska communities. The communities receiving the service are: Tenakee Springs; Edna Bay; Naukati Bay; Port Alexander; and Port Protection. AT&T received a $1 million grant to provide the Internet service for one year. The grant is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Community Connect Grant Program, and it is administered by the Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development. Grants were available to provide service to rural, economically challenged communities that did not already have high-speed Internet access. AT&T has established an "Internet cafe" for each of the five communities. The cafes, set in central locations available to all residents, include up to six laptop computers, one printer, one scanner, and one projector. In addition, AT&T is providing a vendor to make training available to community residents. "We feel fortunate to have this opportunity to help Alaskans gain access to communications infrastructure on par with that available in other parts of the United States and the world," said Mike Felix, president, AT&T Alascom. "High speed Internet access is a natural extension of the communications technology we have been committed to providing to Alaskans for more than 100 years." The communities receiving no-cost Internet service from AT&T vary in population from 49 to 135 residents, according to the 2000 Census.
