AT&T Invites Community to Fur Rondy Fireworks Extravaganza
Popular Event Moves to Saturday This Year
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Feb. 21, 2008 - AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) invites the community to enjoy the Fur Rendezvous fireworks show at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. The dazzling display of fireworks will be visible throughout much of downtown, with Rondy Central at Third Avenue and E Street being a prime viewing spot. In previous years, the fireworks were held on the first Friday night of Fur Rendezvous, but this year the popular event has been moved to Saturday night.
"We decided to move the event from Friday to Saturday night this year to make it easier for families to enjoy the event," said Susan Duck, executive director of Fur Rendezvous Inc.
"Rondy is one of Anchorage's most exciting and beloved traditions," said Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. "I have great memories of watching the Rondy fireworks as a child, and I'd encourage all Anchorage residents to come out Saturday night and enjoy this wonderful community event."
"We are excited to once again support Fur Rondy," said Mike Felix, president of AT&T Alascom. "Community involvement is very important to our company and its employees, and Rondy is a great opportunity for all of us to get out and shake off the winter blues."
In addition to sponsoring the fireworks show, AT&T is also supporting several other Rondy events, including two new initiatives:
AT&T is sponsoring free wireless Internet service at three spots downtown: Rondy Central at Third Avenue and E Street, the Egan Center and Sunshine Plaza.
AT&T is providing mobile phone service to give Rondy organizers the ability to send text messages to anyone who signs up for the service. People who wish to receive the text messages on their wireless phones just need to text the word Rondy to 907-227-5041. Customers do not need to be AT&T wireless subscribers to receive the text messages; normal text-messaging rates may apply for those who subscribe to the service.
AT&T is a sponsor of the 2008 Miners and Trappers Ball scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at the Egan Convention Center. This year's Miners and Trappers Ball features three live bands and, according to event organizers, "the biggest costume contest this side of Mardi Gras."
